We are very excited about this litter. This breeding brings together a unique combination of top producing Groenendael and Tervuren lines from Belgium and France. Zaki and Zoum complement each other very well, in all aspects: structure, type, pedigree, temperament, and health. We are expecting beautiful, healthy puppies with good companion temperaments, and with excellent potential for show and performance activities.

THE SIRE:
CH Zaki of the Two (Belgium)
Birthdate: January 15, 2000
Groenendael male
Hips: OFA BSD-2900G33MPI; Elbows BSD-EL692M33-PI; Eyes: CERF BSD-1330/2004
Breeder: Eric Desschans (Belgium)

How Zaki came to us is an interesting tale. We were in Europe, and had arranged to visit Eric Desschans (Breeder, "of the Two") in Belgium. We had wanted to show him pictures of our line out of Gr CH Othello of the Two, the great grey Terv imported to the U.S. We have also based our Terv line on the outstanding RE CH Beggy of the Two, whom Eric also bred. Eric was a very gracious host, and at one point he asked us if we would like to see a litter of Groenendael puppies that he had bred. We didn't realize that Eric bred Groenendael, but of course he has been successfully breeding Groenendael for many years. The puppies were 8 weeks old and they were very, very high in quality. We fell in love with a beautiful female--but there was a gorgeous male puppy who just kept coming up to us, saying, "Look at me!" So of course we ended up taking these 2 puppies, Zaki and Ziris, home with us. The interesting thing is, that their pedigree represents a line breeding on one of our favorite Tervs, RE CH Beggy of the Two.
Zaki is a very outgoing, social dog-he loves to show. He has excellent bone, a lot of coat, deep black in color. Zaki has a beautiful outline--a very short back, wonderful length of neck, good length of leg; he is an elegant dog. His ears are small, triangular. He has beautiful expression, with an excellent dark almond eye, correct stop, full dentition, scissors bite. He has nice, balanced side movement--moves true in front, single tracks in rear. Most important to us, Zaki is a loving family companion.
In AKC showing, Zaki finished his championship with a 5 point major at the Louisville shows. The next day, his first time out as a special, he earned an Award of Merit. Zaki recently won a UKC major under a Groenendael breeder-judge. Zaki has received Excellent conformation ratings from Belgian breeder-judges Maureen Gargin, Karen Johnson, Sharon Redmer, Joanne La Fear, Alleyne Dickens, Amanda McLaren, Michel Griol, and Melissa Poage.
Zaki has passed health screenings for hips (OFA), elbows (OFA) and eyes (CERF 2004).
About Zaki's pedigree:
We had the privilege of meeting both CH Queeny of the Two and sr CH Neua of the Two while at Eric's. Neua is sister to Nebukadneser of the Two, an outstanding Groenendael male who can be found in many pedigrees in Europe.
sr CH Neua of the Two is the grandmother to Zaki on his mother's side; her sister, Night of the Two is a great grandmother on his father's side. Neua and Night's parents were Jaras van de Hoge Laer and Freya van de Hoge Laer. Jaras and Freya are both Tervuren and are out of RE CH Beggy of the Two, hence the linebreeding on Beggy.
Urgyen de Lligabosc placed First in a large Open class at the Belgian National Specialty in 1999 under Michel Griol. Eric Desschans has recently begun to show Urgyen with excellent success. Urgyen received an Excellent rating and passed the temperament test (which includes a coup de feu, gunshot) at the 2001 French National Specialty, and earned the coveted sujet recommande (sr) rating.
Zaki's pedigree was also a linebreeding on some outstanding Groenendael: Domaine des Noirs was a Belgian kennel that produced sr CH Dandy du Domaine des Noirs. Dandy was CAC at the 1981 French specialty. Dandy appears on both sides of Zaki's pedigree. According to Dr Surget (Le Chien de Berger Belge), Dandy had influence on French lines as well. One of those kennels was the French kennel, Iamara. Another famous Belgian kennel that appears in the 4th generation of the pedigree is Baraque des Planches. Other great French kennels appearing in the pedigree are de la Quievre, and Chemin des Dames.
The top producing Groenendael RE CH Louky des Severiers and RE Zoupy de la Baraque de Planches also appear on both sides of Zaki's pedigree.

THE DAM:
Zoum des Terres Bergeres (Belgium)
Birthdate: 5/13/00
Groenendael female
Hips: OFA BSD-2998G37F-PI; elbows BSD-EL773F37-PI; Eyes: CERF BSD1331/2004.
Breeders: Serge and Joke DeWilde
On several occasions, Serge and Joke have very warmly welcomed us into their home in Belgium and introduced us to their wonderful dogs. They breed outstanding Tervuren and Groenendael.
Zoum is a beautiful, medium sized bitch with excellent type and conformation. She has small, triangular ears, a lovely head with parallel planes, and full dentition in a scissors bite. Like Zaki, Zoum has a wonderful outline: she is short backed, with nice length of neck. She single tracks front and rear, and has excellent side movement. Zoum has a deep black coat of correct texture. She is a great housedog. Where Zaki is the outgoing "partyboy", Zoum is friendly, but more reserved. She has been shown only once, in a UKC match where she was rated Excellent. Zoum loves tracking, and is very serious about her work-although she has not been entered in any tracking trials yet, she has proven her nose by finding lost objects for her owners both in the home and outdoors (including finding a dropped flashlight in a large field at night!).
Zoum has passed health screenings for hips (OFA), elbows (OFA) eyes (CERF 2004), and thyroid (MSU, 2004).

About Zoum's Pedigree:
We met both of Zoum's parents, Ultimo and Valentine, at the DeWildes. Both were lovely dogs. We especially loved Ultimo's friendly, gentle temperament and would have loved to have taken him home! On an earlier visit, we also met sr Farouche de la Douce Plaine, Zoum's grandmother. Farouche was a beautiful Tervuren, and was also the mother to our Terv, Xola (she is pictured on our webpage). We imported Xola des Terres Bergeres from the De Wildes 7 years ago, and she has produced 3 exceptional Terv litters for us.
There are great dogs on both sides of Zoum's pedigree. Her great-grandfather is Nebukadneser of the Two, brother to Neua and Night, in Zaki's pedigree. Zoum's pedigree is full of top producing dogs and bitches form Belgium and France: Re Bellman du Perigord Vert (a gray Terv), who was son of the famous Terv, RE Fr CH Sam de La Douce Plaine, and the equally famous Groenendael, RE Fr CH Perette du Chemin de Dames. Perettes's parents were the great RE CH Louky des Severiers x RE Fr Ch Vega du Chemin des Dames (both Groenendael). Farouche's mother, Killies van de Hoge Laer, was out of Fr CH Un Vision du Chemin des Dames (a Terv out of 2 top Groenendael, RE Fr CH Clark de la Pouroffe and RE Fr CH Romy du Chemin des Dames) and RE Bel CH Beggy of the Two. Zoum's mother, Valentine, was out of 2 famous, top producing Groenendael RE Fr CH Gylson de la Fureur du Crepuscule and RE Fr Lux CH Oshiwa des Terres Bergeres. Gylson's parents were the top producing RE Fr Lux CH Ares du Bois du Tot (gray Terv) and RE Bettina du Parc de l'Hay (Groenendael). Oshiwa's parents were the equally impressive Re Fr CH Ulzar du Bois du Ponty and RE Fr CH Balagny de la Douce Plaine, both Groenendael.
