Benjamin PIERCE (b. 1757 Chelmsford, MA - d. 1839) - As a Revolutionary
War Brigade Major, Pierce was immediately (1786) asked to organize the
Hillsborough County (NH) Militia...He married 1st in 1787 to Elizabeth
ANDREWS; 2nd to Anna KENDRICK, in 1790. One of Pierce's own nine
children, Franklin,
later became President (served 1853 - 1857).

A. RAMSDELL (b. 1834 Milford, NH - d. 1900) - Peterborough lawyer,
then Nashua political figure and businessman; Governor 1897/9.

Jeremiah
SMITH (b. 1759 Peterborough, NH - d. 1842) - Smith was a delegate
to the New Hampshire Constitutional Conventions of 1791 - 1792. He later
returned to Exeter, NH, where he married Eliza ROSS, March 8, 1797.

B. SMITH (b. 1838 Saxton's River, VT - d. 1914) - Governor 1893/5.
John Smith was one of eight children born to Ammi and Lydia (BUTLER) SMITH;
three of his siblings died in childhood. His father first operated a sawmill
at Hillsborough, NH but moved to Vermont to manufacture woolens (1833/47).
He returnedto Hillsborough to retire.

Fredrick
SMYTH (b. 1819 Candia - d. 1899) - Smyth served again as Mayor
of Manchester in 1864, and was elected governor in 1865 and 1866.

John STEELE (b. 1789 Salisbury, NC - d. 1865) - Orphaned at an
early age, Steele arrived at Peterborough in May, 1811, after meeting
Captain Nathaniel MORISON, of Peterborough, NH, a coachmaker who was briefly
at Fayetteville, NC..Steele married Jane MOORE, in 1816, and in 1817 started
the first power loom in New Hampshire, at Peterborough.

D. SWART (b. 1856 Margaretville, NH - d. 1936 Nashua, NH) - In
1890, he joined Charles A. ROBY, in Nashua, NH, in the retail lumber business,
and in 1892, Roby & Swart purchased the only edge tool works in Nashua,
as well as a woodworking plant. They consolidated with Cook &
Company, while retaining their manufacturing and wholesale business as
"Roby & Swart Manufacturing".
