Dr. Hou's Integrative Oncology Program

Traditional Chinese Medicine can be used while undergoing western treatment. It is known to ease side effects of chemotherapy and radiation therapy. It strengthens the immune system, stimulates the body's natural healing abilities and promotes physical and emotional well-being.

Prior to surgery the focus is usually on the strengthening of the immune system. It can also help with anxiety and fear.

Post-surgery, treatment with TCM can help the body to recuperate in a shorter period of time. Often the patient experiences less pain, reduced swelling, and the immune system is strengthened.

While undergoing chemotherapy or radiation therapy, TCM might help with the side effects commonly experienced. The increased flow in the meridians and blood vessels diminishes the danger of necrosis. TCM also promotes the detoxifying-process of the body. TCM is often used to boost the immune system, which in turn enables the body to fight opportunistic infections and helps with the detoxification.

Common symptoms experienced by cancer patients include fatigue, night sweats, headaches, swollen lymph nodes, pain and depression. TCM has much to offer to ease these complaints.

The common side effect of western cancer medications and therapies are nausea, diarrhea, constipation, dizziness, insomnia, and anemia. TCM has proven its effectiveness in dealing with many of these side effects.

TCM also can be used in post- western treatments for cancer rehabiliation.

For ITWM treatment, the patients have a choice. They can do TCM and Western medicine at same time. They can do only TCM or they can do Western medicine first, and then use TCM. It depends on the patient's condition, financial resources, and treatment choice.
