Staying Sharp in the Summertime!

Isn't summer spectacular? You can relax, sleep late, play all day, swim, travel -- just about anything's possible in the lazy, hazy days of summer!
But there are LOTS of fun ways to keep our brains from becoming too lazy in the summer heat! To stay sharp for second grade, try doing some of these!

Read, read, read! Read to everyone you can -- even your pets! Read fiction and non-fiction, serious and funny - anything that you're interested in!

Have mom or dad read to you! Listen to some really great books - I know many of you enjoy chapter books - they're great for relaxing on the beach!

Write about your summer adventures. You can keep a diary or a journal, or maybe write a story about what you'd like to do.

Write letters or postcards. Many of you will be traveling to some neat places, so share your experiences with your friends and relatives.

Play car games. On those long road trips, play word or number games with someone to keep your mind challenged. One fun one is to say a name, then your partner says a name that begins with the last letter of the name just said. Can you keep it going?

Read the signs and directions for mom or dad as they're driving!

Practice counting in the car by ones, tens, fives, twos, threes -- whatever you can!

Play guess the number. Think of a number, then give "greater than, less than" clues so someone can guess it.

Write a letter to your teacher! She'd love to hear how you are doing!!

Rainy summer days are good for crafts. Try a new type of art project, such as papier mache. Then write about your creation!

Go to a movie with your family, and then write a "review" of it. Did you like it? Thumbs up or down?

Go to the library on a rainy day!

Read and try out a new recipe with your mom or dad!

Play the "timed" game. Use an egg timer and see how many times you can write your name, bounce a ball, jump up and down, etc. before the bell rings or the sand runs out! Then time someone else!

Practice your first grade spelling words -- especially those rule-breaking red words! Try making the longest sentence you can - that makes sense!!
