Starring our Centers!


Centers are an important part of our day in first grade! Here are some of the centers we can choose from!

LITERACY CENTERS

Literacy centers are areas and activities in our classroom that support and enhance reading and writing. They are available to use during workshop time, after jobs have been completed. Some of our literacy centers include:

library corner with big and trade books, plus reading sticks and "fingers"

poem and song charts

mobile listening centers (which we can take right to our desks and use the walkman to listen and read!)

read around the room (reading classroom print with flashlights as pointers!)

individual pocket charts with various word and sentence cards

spelling centers, which include magnetic letters, fingerpaint bags, sign language spelling, slates, clay, and other fun ways to practice spelling!

word games such as bingo, concentration and lotto

writing center, complete with various kinds of paper, crayons, markers, pencils, pens, rubber stamps and ink, envelopes, stickers and publishing materials

PLAY CENTERS

At open center time, there are other areas and activities to choose from. Here are a few:

math center, featuring unifix, centimeter and linkercubes, pattern and attribute blocks, various counters, stringing discs, balances, scales, coins, learning links and sticks, dice and many other materials

computer center - two computers with a variety of educational software

sand play

dramatic play

blocks

legos and other manipulatives

science center, including magnets, magnifying glasses, animal and insect models, as well as items related to the featured unit of study

social studies center which showcases items related to the current unit
