From satellite communications to home-brew QRP and low power operation, our interests in this hobby vary widely and often. Most exciting moment recently was working MIR. After thirty-five plus years of amateur radio I have still not tired of the hobby. I only wish that I had more time and monetary resources to explore all facets of this exhilarating hobby.
Scouting
My wife and I are involved in scouting, both with the Boy Scouts and Girls Scouts.
The highlight of Pack 288's Cub Scout year is the pinewood derby. This year was no exception. The parents are afforded the opportunity to build their own cars and compete against each other. The competition is fierce, may the best car win.
PJAS (Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science)
Regional competition this year was
hosted by Baldwin-Whitehall High School on February 3, 2001. Our middle
school sent sixteen students to the competition. Students worked on their
scientific experiments and presentation skills for
several months in preparation. PJAS provides a wonderful opportunity
for students to expand their knowledge in the areas
of science, mathematics and computer science. Every student, regardless
of the judges decision, is a winner; having taken on a challenge few are
willing to accept. Twelve of the sixteen students who participated will be going on to
the State Meet in May.
A work in progress!
I started to develop these web pages using the facilities provided by this ISP, but quickly became aware that it would be best to work offline and upload the pages once they were the way I wanted them. The "development system" is an old Hewlett Packard Vectra 5/133 running SuSE LINUX 6.2. The HP system came with a 1.2GB hard drive installed and I added a 540MB drive that I bought from BG Micro. I could really use more disk storage, but it's not too cramped now. If you haven't tried LINUX yet, I'd highly recommend it. This system came with StarOffice, I'm using StarOffice to devlope this document; compilers for more languages than I care to try, java and lots of other neat stuff. You ought to be able to find a 486 cheaply enough to bring LINUX up and try it, just make certain you get as much storage (both memory and disk) as you can. I have 32MB of real memory on this system. I would like to have more, but performance is acceptable.
And then you can 'have fun!' too.
