Written Summary:
If you
are looking for a good quick study in the use of edged weapons and you have little
to no experience in this area, then this video would be an excellent choice. Mr.
Ryan teaches an abbreviated but realistic look at the use of the knife in self defense.
The introductory portion of this video contains superb information for the novice
concerning blade selection, the pros and cons of different blade options, and some
clarification of knife terminology.
The actual knife fighting portion of
this video discusses and demonstrates the importance of balance, distancing, blocking,
grips, slashing vs stabbing, offensive techniques, counter attacking and a comparison
of knife strategy vs knife fighting tactics. One particular segment that I’d recommend
for everyone is the segment on Mr Ryan’s own knife fighting stance. This is one of
the best knife fighting stances I have ever seen and it is also unconventional (
which means you won’t find it in your local dojo ). The video closes with a “practice
training session “ where the viewer can stand in front of his televison and attempt
to react and defend against a video attacker. This is great for solo training and
to observe what a trained knifer attack might look like.
Despite the relatively
short length of this video, the amount of material contained is well worth the price
with the possible exception of those with extensive training in weapons based martial
arts ( such as Arnis ).
