Written Summary:
This tape
is basically an attempt by Mr. Vunak to unify the trapping hands concepts of Wing
Chun Kung Fu with the limb destructions of the Filipino martial arts. To some degree,
Mr. Vunak succeeds doing this. However, the material shown is somewhat esoteric
in places and I wonder about the combat utility of trapping hands in the first place.
In most fights that I have seen, trapping range exists for only a microsecond before
one opponent goes down, goes back, or the opponent’s separate. So how useful is
this kind of material ? Not that useful, but still very good to know. As Mr. Vunak
clearly states, trapping is a way to get around an obstruction ( a block for example
). If there is no obstruction, then there is no to attempt to trap. The Filipino
section of this video is very similar to the material presented on Mr. Vunak’s trapping
tape by Panther including limb destructions and low line kicking. As in the previous
video, this materia is very basic and only suitable for people with little to no
background in the Filipino arts.
So who is this video for ? Well, if you
own a Wing Chun Dummy, it is probably safe to say that you already know the Wing
Chun portion of this video. This tape does give some good ideas on using the dummy
for Filipino training and I think this is probably the most useful portion of this
video. Still, a lot of the material on this video is estoeric and not that street
applicable in my opinion. Trapping skills are fun to watch, fun to learn and practice,
and fun to teach. But I doubt the utility of trapping skills in general and this
video is for people who realize that but still want to learn some basic trapping
hands and limb destructions.
