Written Summary:

This is volume one of a two tape series on Russian Sambo by Nicholas Starks. Stark’s delivers a lot of information in each of his video’s and they are reasonably priced as well. Some of the techniques you will have seen on other video’s however some will be new to the viewer.

This series deals mainly with the sport aspect of Sambo although many of the techniques could be applied in a no rules environment. Some of the techniques covered are the jump around armbar, rolling knee bar, leg trip to knee bar, arm locks and much more. There is also a interesting section on defeating a person who is trying to counter your armbar. Also covered is a section on illegal techniques (chokes are not allowed in sport Sambo) which deals with mostly collar chokes and wrist locks.

The last two segments on this video will be a repeat if you already have the Submission Fighting Series by Starks. Repeated is the seminar footage and Stark’s US Vale Tudo fight. There is so much material on this tape that even if you have the Submission series with the Seminar footage and
the Vale Tudo fight, you still have a lot of techniques presented in the video. (The 43+ techniques listed above do not include the seminar footage).

On the negative side Starks could have gone into more detail on some of the techniques presented. A total beginner may not pick up on some of the finer points that should be explained but are sometimes left out. Also noted is that Starks does make several technical errors throughout the video. There are not a lot of them but nonetheless they are still there. An example of this is that when Starks is applying an armbar at times he doesn’t keep his opponents thumb pointed up while applying the lock. Sometimes Starks does it properly then other times he doesn’t. This video would of scored higher if Starks would of taken his time and explained in greater detail what he was doing and why. Overall this tape still has a number of good things to offer especially for those who do not want to pay big dollars for some other tape sets that are available.
