Written Summary:
This tape is the second
in a series from Panther Productions that features Miquel Ibarra demonstrating basic
techniques from the art aikijujitsu. The techniques shown in this video illustrate
some of the basic principles of aikijujitsu that are necessary as a base from which
to learn the more advanced techniques that appear on subsequent videos. The quality
of the visual work on this video is second to none as it is on all videos from Panther.
While the techniques on this video are considered to be fundamental, they
are not necessarily easy to do. Mr. Ibarra does a very good job of showing the subtleties
of the techniques and the narration by Mr. Ibarra is very good at explaining to the
viewer the concepts behind the techniques. Some of the concepts that are introduced
to the viewer are moving from the center of the body, projection of energy, circular
motion, and off balancing of the opponent. All of the techniques are shown at least
once in slow motion to help the viewer see all of the fine points. The techniques
shown deal with escapes from wrist grabs, defenses against strikes, wrist and joint
locks, a few takedowns and some basic ground control moves.
My main criticism
of this video is that even though the viewer is shown a total of 22 techniques, there
are too many repetitions of the same techniques in my opinion. Personally, I would
have preferred more techniques and less repetition. This is a serious flaw on nearly
every Panther video I have watched. You can usually count on the highest “ cost/technique
ratio “ of any martial art video producer.
The degree to which we would recommend
this video is determined by the experience that the viewer brings to the table. If
the viewer has no experience in aikijujitsu or aikido, then this video would receive
a high recommendation since it covers many of the basic concepts. However, if the
viewer is experienced in either of these arts, then they might find the material
a bit repetitious. That said however, this is a somewhat pleasing video to watch
and Mr. Ibarra is terrific at his art.
