Written Summary:
In this
tape, Mark Kerr shows the viewer how to shoot in, and quickly take an opponent to
the ground. Kerr shows how to "run through" the opponent, using ones head
and shoulder, in conjunction with single and double leg takedown techniques. Though
this information was valuable, I felt the real beauty and value of this tape lied
in its additional techniques, in these Kerr showed how to maintain control, and counter
your opponents various reactions to these shooting techniques.
The only downside
or missing piece that I would've liked to see, would've been Kerr specifically showing
examples of how to deal with an opponent who attempts to throw an elbow or knee,
while one is going in for the single and double leg takedown. Examples of him doing
that with an opponent, while having headgear on, would've been nice to see (hint,
hint). And Kerr briefly addresses this issue by implying the speed with which he
goes in would make that almost impossible for anyone to do. And to Kerr's credit,
he is VERY FAST! I concur when he says that 99% of the time no one would stand a
chance of landing a clean elbow or knee shot on him. But Kerr's speed, size, experience,
and confidence, is something the rest of us may never have. Watching this tape, with
the mindset of a beginner, I couldn't help but wonder how long it would take for
someone to be able to do these techniques well, so they wouldn't catch a deftly timed
knee or elbow. Kerr kept saying "Practice, practice, practice", but how
long are we talking about here? 6 months, a year, 5 or 10 years?
All in all
the takedown techniques Kerr shows look solid and very effective, however you'll
probably need very good, strong young knees, to get in low and fast like he does.
Although there are only about 6 techniques shown, Kerr "breaks down" each
of the important subtleties/sub-components of each, and does an excellent job of
instructing the viewer. That combined with the control and counters, make this a
somewhat short, but excellent introductory tape, IMHO, to NHB Fundamental Takedowns.
