Written Summary:
Matt Furey
is at it again with yet another excellent video to add to his already impressive
video library. This video entitled How to Hook a Heavyweight Without Flopping to
the Guard is 58 minutes of hard hitting, fast paced, non stop in your face, like
me or not, Matt Furey type of video. Matt draws on his back ground from collegiate
wrestling, shuai-chiao and catch wrestling in order to complete this tape. The video,
as the title suggests, is all about submitting your opponent without just falling
to the ground and pulling your opponent into your guard. Of course it would behoove
any fighter to know how to fight from the guard in case you do end up there but Matt’s
philosophy is don’t go to the ground voluntarily. In this video Matt gives the viewer
many options in which they can finish the fight while standing or on the way to the
ground.
Furey as usual gets right to business. There are no bells or whistles
as Matt puts it, for those yet to see the tape this equals no introduction, no music,
just pure instruction. Chances are unless your well versed in catch wrestling and
wrestling there will be something for you on this video. It is pretty much crammed
with quality information. A few words that came to my mind while watching this video
were words such as pain, ouch, damn that would hurt or any combination of the three.
In other words be careful with some of the material presented on this video. It is
always nice to have training partners you can work with more than once.
After
about 50 minutes the video began to come to an end or so I thought and I was left
thinking that too many of the moves lacked the attention to detail that should of
been present. To Matt’s credit though at the end of the video he goes over in greater
detail many of the techniques shown earlier. These include the guillotine choke,
head chancery, front face lock, shin lock, ankle lock, arm lock (2 variations), double
achilles lock and the reverse heel hook. Why Matt didn’t do this at the time the
techniques were shown on the tape I’m not sure. Maybe this was done on purpose (it
will make it easy for quick reference of the finer details of the techniques for
the viewer) or maybe Matt completed the video and realized that the details were
lacking. My guess would be that Matt did this on purpose, either way I was glad to
see the details were there. One slightly negative point to address concerning this
video and all of Matt’s video’s for that matter is the price. The video is not cheap.
Considering that the video is of home Production quality some of this saving should
be passed onto the consumer. I agree with Mr. Furey that the consumer is paying for
the information on the video and that is what is most important but there are others
who have an equally important message to bring to the public who don’t charge quite
so much for it. I like to think of Matt’s video’s as a diamond in the rough. The
material is excellent, the production quality is average and diamonds are expensive.
In spite of the price tag on this tape (remember I said this was a slightly negative
point) one should seriously consider owning it. Much of the material contained in
it is unique, all of it I found to be highly effective. If price isn’t a major consideration
for you than by all means BUY this video. It’s a real gem.
Here is some of
what you will find on this video:
- the video starts off with some basic wrestling
concepts such as inside arm control and pummeling - figure four front face lock and
the entry into it.
- head chancery
- guillotine choke with a slight
hand position variation which makes the choke much tighter. The setup is also shown
for this.
- importance of chin control when someone tries to shoot on you
with a neck crank
- defend the shoot into a neck crank
- reverse cross
face
- double wrist lock
- counter to double leg to into reverse heel
hook
- inside ankle trip into leg lock
- from your knees opponent gets
a single leg into a whizzer and quarter nelson and various submissions.
-
counter to single leg into head scissor and various submissions
- leg trip
throw
- ankle pick into a ankle lock
Excellent video Mr. Furey
