Written Summary:
This is
the first tape in a three tape series on Training Drills for Martial Artists by Matt
Furey. For those who don’t already know who Matt Furey is (most I’m sure do through
his other video’s, books and web site ) here is a bit about his background. Matt
is a gold medal winner at the World Shuai-chiao Kung Fu Championship’s in Beijing,
China as well as a former national collegiate wrestling champion. Recently Matt has
been teaming up with respected catch wrestler Tony Cecchine to learn the art of “hooking”.
This three tape video series has some excellent drills that an
Instructor can
add to his classes. Over the months I personally have put in several of these drills
into my classes and have received positive feedback from students. The first tape
deals strickly with solo drills and can certainly get someone in better shape as
well as improve them as a Martial Artist.
Some of the drills included in
this video are:
- Indian squats
- Tiger bend pushups
- Penetration
step drill
- Sprawling drill
- Neck strengthing exercises
- Shrimping (hip
scape)
- Crab walk
- Hot dog rolls (wasn’t sure what this one was for)
-
Kangaroo jumps
- Frog jumps
- Foot strengthing exercises
- drills to strenghten
the tendons and ligaments in your elbows (I liked this one)
- Jacknife sit ups
-
Hyperextensions
- Front break falls to get your body use to the impact of falling
(very basic)
As you can see there are a lot of drills presented on this 25
minute video. The only complaint I had with the series was that the tape lengths
were quite short. This series should of been on two tapes (or even one) rather than
three. To Matt’s credit though there is very little wasted time on the video’s just
drill after drill. There is no playback or slow motion just to eat up tape time.
If your looking for drills to add to your personal training or if your an
Instructor and want to add some new material to your class this would be an excellent
start.
