Written Summary:
This video
is the second video in a 2 tape series dealing with Maphilindo Silat and taught by
Rick Tucci. Maphilindo Silat is a martial art founded by Dan Inosanto and is a combination
art that draws from various sources of Indonesian, Malayan, and Filipino martial
arts. The material on this tape is devastatingly effective but does require a high
level of skill to master. The techniques shown are based a great deal on body awareness
( both yours and the opponent ) and require a good sense of body sensitivity to be
effective.
To begin with, we are shown some basic limb destructions against
a kicking opponent. Entries against kicks followed by various options are then shown.
The take downs shown through out this video can seriously injure one’s training
partner so caution in training is of the utmost importance. We are shown some basic
limb destructions against punches and then we are treated to a series of techniques
of these limb destructions. There are many very effective takedowns on this video
and many of them are unique to the martial arts of Southeast Asia. Techniques using
a sarong ( a type of garment ) are shown and while I do not expect most people to
ever actually use a sarong, the techniques could be readily applied with flexible
weapons.
The final section of the video shows a training format using a
basic technique ( a head turn throw ) as an example. One walks through a technique
using various guntings, various takedowns, and ending with various techniques of
ground control. The ground control techniques on this video are terrific and appear
to be excrutiatingly painful.
This video is recommended for martial artists
of intermediate to advanced skill level. The very nature of these techniques makes
them difficult for beginners. But the material shown is certainly worth investing
some training time.
