Written Summary:
Professor
Moses Powell is something of a martial arts legend on the East Coast. After watching
this introductory tape of Sanuces Ryu, ( Mr. Powell’s fighting system ), I can certainly
understand why he has such a reputation. It’s a bit difficult to describe this hybrid
system but it seems to be a combination of Japanese jujitsu, aiki-jujitsu and pressure
point fighting ( kyusho jitsu ). This is a devastating system of self defense. Mr.
Powell and his instructors run through a great many techniques quickly and without
a great deal of explanation. But the results are terrific as the ukes are thrown
around the mat like rag dolls. Mr. Powell and his instructors are exquisitely expert
in their application of nerve points and it shows in the grimacing faces of the unfortunate
ukes.
The tape begins with the usual classroom warm up followed by some outstanding
ukemi. From there, Mr. Powell, or one of his instructors, move rapidly from one technique
to the next. From time to time, Mr. Powell breaks down each technique in detail but
the majority of the tape is demonstration only. As good as this tape is, I do wish
there had been more detailed explanation of how the techniques were being applied.
For this reason, this video is probably not suited for the typical beginner in the
martial arts. More advanced students will find this an educational and entertaining
video. Highly recommended for anyone with a jujitsu, aikijitsu, or kyusho jitsu background.
In fact, I would recommend this video to any martial artist of intermediate to advanced
skill level. Perhaps we will be able to review other tapes in this series in the
future.
