For Eric on his Birthday

When I think about Eric's birthday, my first
thoughts are sad ones, remembering the
intense hardships and poverty of his childhood
years.
Did he ever have a birthday party?
I doubt it.
Vividly, I can "see" a lonely child out
in the street on dark, wet nights, often
hungry, trying to fight his fears.
Every day an unrelenting battle just to
stay alive.
In the first years of the 60's, I didn't know
about Eric's tragic life as a youngster - I
just saw one of the most handsome men
imaginable, with an enchanting smile and
a magnificent rich, deep voice. I thought he
was fantastic, everything a real man should
be, so strong in character, and yet so gentle.
What a special man he was, to have overcome such
an appalling start to life and come through without
bitterness. The more I read, the more I realize
just how great was Eric's achievement.
There is an open look in his beautiful smile,
and great gentleness, I love the way his eyes
light up. Even fame didn't change him, he remained
true to his ideals.

Eric, I just want you to know how much you are
loved. You are remembered on your birthday, and
at all times with real devotion.
You're wonderful beyond any words.
