About This Site

Jens Bjørneboe in English was launched in March 1998. Its purpose is to bring a major 20th-century Norwegian writer to the attention of the English-speaking world, and to provide a context and background for helping anglophone readers understand the works that are available in English.

My goal in selecting materials to include has been to sketch the broad outlines of Bjørneboe's range, in such a way as to elucidate the works now available in English—all of which are from Bjørneboe's late period.

The site contains three main sections:

A Bjørneboe Reader provides a selection of e-texts in English translation from Bjørneboe's poems and essays, and excerpts from his longer works.

About Jens Bjørneboe provides background information. Here you will find a chronology, bibliographies of works by and about Bjørneboe, a selection of introductory articles as well as criticism of his work by a variety of authors.

Works Available in English aims to give as complete information as possible about works by and about Jens Bjørneboe which have appeared in printed form in English.

The Theme index covers the first two sections, as well as the Quotes of the Month. The latter were discontinued after three years; brief quotations on specialized topics have been added.

The Index of Authors and Translators lists writers (other than Bjørneboe) who have contributed to this site. In addition, "A Bjørneboe Reader" has title indexes in English and Norsk, plus a separate list of the essays and excerpts annotated with pullquotes.

I have compiled a mailing list. If you
— would like to be on it,
— would like to be removed from it
— would like to link to the site
— have comments, suggestions, questions
— know of writings about Bjørneboe in any language that are not listed in the bibliographies
—please email me

Acknowledgments

I am responsible for most, but not all, of the translations on this site. Other translators who have been generous in allowing me to post their work include Janet Garton, Solrun Hoaas, Joe Martin, Timothy Schiff, Fred Wasser, and John Weinstock.

I also owe a debt to Jens Bjørneboe's widow, Tone Bjørneboe, and his daughter, Therese Bjørneboe, for their friendship and support; to publishers on both sides of the Atlantic—Gyldendal Norsk Forlag, Aschehoug, Cappelen, and Pax in Norway, Norvik Press in Britain, Dufour Editions, Peter Lang Publishing, and Sun & Moon in the US—for allowing me to use their material; and to the many authors who have written about Bjørneboe and allowed me to use their work.

The list of individuals who have encouraged me is too long to include here, but special mention must be made of Alison Lewis, without whom this site would never have come into being, and whose steady encouragement has kept me going.
