History of events:
(press numbers to see references)
• 1977 - the theory of propagation of the pressure wave (wave pheno-
menon) in blood circulation system (BCS) had been introduced [7]
• 1982 - the wave phenomenon in BCS had been simulated by computer [8]
• 1984 - the NHLBI regulation (RFP NHLBI-84-1, Appendix 2, dated 1983):
"Requirement for Proposal" states:
"... pulsatile pumps need not mimic the "normal" left ventricular pulse
or arterial pressure waveforms" [3]
• 1984 - the first TAH by Jarvik had been implemented. There is a
considerable difference from the natural pressure waveform. [10]
• 1992 - the Total Artificial Heart, that can simulate a natural shape of a
pulse pressure is patented [5]
• 1996 - the NHLBI rejected proposals to research and develop the TAH
with ability to simulate of the natural pressure pulse (in our files)
• 1998 - Dr. Lenfant, Director of the NHLBI stated in his letter:
"...a pulsate shape that mimics the natural shape, produced by the
native heart... judged to be relatively unimportant fore developing
artificial hearts" (in our files).
• 1999 - in our search of hundreds of scientific articles we did not find
any publications related to the in vivo or in vitro investigation of the
implementation of the TAH with simulation of the natural pulse shape
(in our files)
