United States: Three die as Emery Worldwide jet crashes

AN EMERY Worldwide DC-8 cargo plane has crashed into a car salvage yard near Sacramento, California, soon after takeoff, killing all three people aboard and sparking a huge fire.

Federal Aviation Authority Western Region spokesman Jim Whitehead said the cargo jet crashed shortly after the pilot reported a 'severe centre of gravity problem', which refers to the way the cargo - which included transmission fluid, clothing and a small amount of detonating explosives - was stowed in the hold.

Authorities said Emery Flight 17 left Sacramento Mather Airport, a converted former air force base just before 2000 hrs local time on its way to Dayton,

Ohio.

The hull of the jet was insured for between Dollars 18m and Dollars 20m.  Emery's insurance is brokered in the London market by Marsh and the risk is

led at Lloyd's by Ace London Aviation.

Emery announced last week it planned to replace its entire fleet of DC-8s over the next five years.
