October 1, 2003

Cargo carrier Emery pleaded guilty yesterday to 12 felony hazmat violations, and agreed to pay a $ 6 million criminal fine that is the second-highest involving aviation hazmat in U.S. history. Materials involved included nonflammable gas, corrosive liquid, flammable liquid, and explosive and radioactive material. Emery admitted it left its Dayton hub 12 times without giving the pilot the required written notice of the hazardous material. The Justice Dept., FAA and Transportation Dept.'s Office of Inspector General were involved in the investigation.
