DOT revokes domestic certificate of shutdown Emery

The US Department of Transportation (DOT) has revoked the domestic all-cargo operating certificate of dormant Emery Worldwide Airlines, which was shut down more than a year ago. The US FAA grounded the cargo carrier on 13 August 2001 after a National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigation into the February 2000 crash of an Emery Worldwide Airlines McDonnell Douglas DC-8 freighter revealed over 100 maintenance violations by the carrier.

Citing mounting losses, Emery Worldwide parent CNF decided not to attempt to restart the airline and closed it. Instead, CNF started a new company called Emery Forwarding, which leases space aboard contract cargo carriers, such as World Airways, to operate Emery's overnight and deferred delivery business.

The DOT says Emery has not requested any further extensions to keep its domestic operating certificate alive, and thus is revoking it. The carrier's charter and foreign cargo certificates are subject to a separate review.
