"When his father was pastor of the Rock Springs Methodist Church, the family lived in the Richland Community, and he attended school at Clearmont Academy near Westminster. He also attended Cokesbury Academy in Abbeville County."
"He joined the Confederate Army in September 1863, joining Company I 2nd Reg. S.C.V. Artillery, under Captain J. B. Humbert of Laurens County. He enlisted in his seventeenth year and was stationed for the greater part of the time on James' Island near Charleston. He saw the shelling of Fort Moultrie and Morris Island. When the war closed, he was sick in the hospital, but walked home from Cheraw to Laurens. He was like other soldiers, had nothing and had to begin life all over again."
"He bought a farm on Colonel's Fork Creek and lived there for two years before he married. He farmed several years, but when the railroad was built through Westminster, he built a home and a store and sold goods in the new town. He built the home he died in in about the year 1878."
