  • My John Stovall is still an “orphan.”
Can you help me return him to the Stovall family tree?

According to my great-grandmother, James Anna Stovall Zimmerman, her grandfather John Stovall came to Rutherford Co., North Carolina from Pocahontas Co., Virginia. His was one of sixty-one families who came to Nacoochee Valley, Habersham (now White) Co., Georgia on 10 May (March?) 1822 from Burke Co., North Carolina.

From The History of Early Settlers of Nacoochee Valley, Habersham Co., GA, we learn that “two groups of settlers migrated to this valley in Georgia and were the first white settlers in the area. The first group left Burke County, NC on March 1 and arrived Nacoochee Valley on March 10, 1822. The second party, following right behind them, using the same campfire grounds, were from Rutherford Co., NC.”

“There were sixty-one families in all, among them, “JOHN STOVALL and wife.” John Stovall settled in the Blue Creek District, and there is a Stovall Mill Covered Bridge still standing located twelve miles north of Cleveland, Georgia named for this pioneer.”
