My John James Lobb is still an orphan. According to family tradition, John and Ann met on their way to America in 1889; they were married in New York City in 1890. I have two 19th century account books from Penrose, Johns farm in Cornwall, which mention trips to market towns (Truro, Penryn, St. Columb, Penzance, Trevessa St. Enoder, etc.) and that they paid rent to Sir Vial Vivian. This gives me little specific information about where in Cornwall that farm was located. Penrose is the name John also gave to his orchard/farm in Preakness, New Jersey. His granddaughter, my mother-in-law, lived down the road from Penrose. She told me that she remembers a "cousin from Australia" coming to visit Penrose in New Jersey several times during her childhood in the 1920s and 1930s. She couldn't remember his given name; he was Mr. Lobb from Australia to her and her older brother. Here is a photograph which shows a picnic at Penrose, probably about 1925-30. It seems to include another Lobb family: are these your ancestors? The 1920 U.S. Census information indicates that my John Lobb was born in England, so perhaps the Australian "cousin" was a brother, cousin, or other close relative. Any help reconnecting this Lobb family is appreciated. |
