... about Gaucho
Gaucho is a New York 32 class, hull # 5. She is a one-design by Sparkman & Stephens and was built in 1936 at the Nevins shipyard. We bought Gaucho (originally Esmeralda, then Vitesse) in September of 1999. My wife (Sandra) and I (Sergio) have been restoring her for two years. In our page you will be able to join us for the launching and her many sailing adventures to come.

My name is Sergio Fernandes. I have been working for 18 years in the maritime industry and devoted my whole life to the practice of yachting. My passion for yachting started on my early childhood days, and since then, I have been sailing almost every type of boat one could think of. I have raced in a variety of classes: from 420's to maxi racers. I have been skipper on major regattas such as "Copa del Rey", "Fastnet", "Salinas Galápagos", "1,000 Chilean Miles", "Buenos Aires-Rio de Janeiro", among others. I received the Skipper Prize on maxis and coached Argentina's national sailing team on Soling and Laser classes. I have logged more than 250.000 nautical miles under sail and have sailed around Cape Horn four times, twice single-handedly.
My nautical passion extends to design and construction. I learned yacht design working with the famous Argentinean yacht designer Don Manuel Campos. I have designed sailing yachts from 30 to 68 feet.
I am Member of the Yacht Club Argentino and the Ocean Cruising Club of England.
Sandra is an educator currently working on her doctorate at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Nautical miles loged? hmm not that many but she says she is a fast learner. She'd better be!
