Major George F. Robinson, Company B of the Eighth Maine Regiment, was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal for his heroic actions in saving the life of then Secretary of State of the United States, William H. Seward.

On the same night as Lincoln's assassination, Robinson fought off Lewis Payne, a Booth co-conspirator, who was sent to assassinate Seward in a Confederate plot to decapitate the Union government.
