Abstract The increasing mobility asks for lightweight design and this is precisely where the use of light metal castings plays a very important role. Computer aided design and modelling, newly developed rapid prototyping systems, new designed casting alloys and processes provide a broad scope for innovative and progressive high tech castings. Available or currently developed highly productive manufacturing technologies are leading to high quality mass production. On the basis of some samples the current enormous process of development in casting technology is demonstrated and an outlook to future trends is given. Not only light metals like aluminum or magnesium alloys but also composite materials and assembling technologies are to be considered to have a great future.
