Abstract A new fabrication technology, rapid prototyping, has been widely used in industry recently for prototypes, mechanism interference checking, conceptual design, and rapid tooling. The major processes in the CAD/CAM/RP system include (1) slicing, which transforms a 3-D part model into 2-D layers, and (2) material path planning that outlines the 2-D contour boundaries and fills in the interior of the contour. Thin paper presents a systematic study for CAD/CAM/RP data processing that begins from the input of a 3-D model in terms of the STL format and concludes at the point where it generates the outputs of the material paths for RP fabrications. The implementation involves an efficient data structure, the slicing algorithms for models and supports, the material deposition path planning for offset and zigzag paths, and material path density analyses. A 3-D computer graphic animation program for RP processing is also generated, which verifies the processing results with a demonstrated example and estimat es the fabrication time and cost.
