Abstract The use of spindles developed by the SETCO Group, Cincinnati, Ohio, by 3-D Technical Services, Franklin, Ohio, in its Milltronics vertical-machining centers is discussed. The company had been experiencing problems on the spindles it previously used in its machining centers. The new spindle had a design that included a combination air purge labyrinth style seal. The use of the new components has eliminated spindle-bearing failure as a cause of machine downtime, with one retrofitted machine having been in operation for 4 years without one single spindle failure.
