Abstract Industrial scanning and rapid prototyping are now being used by paleontologists to reproduce fossils and change their scale. Scale models of dinosaur bones provide unique insights into the specimen in question and into the animal's physiology. The technique also allows paleontologists access to parts of the fossil that would otherwise be inaccessible without sawing. Currently, prototyping is probably too expensive for most paleontologists, but there is optimism that the technique will become much cheaper and provide even better resolution. XX
