Abstract Part of a special section on the U.K. National Centre for Product Design & Development Research (PDR). PDR was established in 1995 by Professor Robert Brown at the University of Wales Institute Cardiff, Wales, and was originally called the Design Engineering Research Centre. PDR is dedicated to assisting industry with design and engineering problems and to research and applications involving advanced product design and development technology and techniques. The center was awarded the 3D Systems World-wide Achievement Award for its rapid prototyping work and recently obtained ISO 9001 accreditation. XX
