Abstract Plastics molders are combining the latest rapid-prototyping technology with unusual metallurgical techniques to achieve 2-week lead times for production molds. These emerging rapid-tooling techniques, which all but eliminate traditional machining of cores and cavities, can drastically reduce lead times. Most of the developments have been made by large manufacturers in the automotive and electronics industries, but custom molders are now starting to take advantage of the new rapid-tooling technologies. Advances in rapid prototyping are described in relation to ballistic particle manufacturing, stereolithography, selective laser sintering, and solid ground curing. The application of rapid-tooling technologies by a number of molders is reported. XX
