Abstract The basics of computed tomography (CT) are explained and its various uses in engineering are discussed. A CT image is derived from a large number of systematic X-ray observations at different viewing angles that are reconstructed into an image by computer. Unlike an ordinary X-ray image, the CT image preserves the full spatial information. Used in conjunction with other methods such as ultrasound, CT can provide evaluations of material integrity that cannot be obtained nondestructively by any other means. However, the technique has proved most valuable in the areas of rapid prototyping, reverse engineering, and metrology. XX
