25. A droid for all seasons.

Author Graham-Rowe, Duncan.

Source New Scientist. v. 166 no2238, May 13 2000, p. 6.

Abstract Researchers from Brandeis University near Boston, Massachusetts, have developed a shape-shifting robot. Hod Lipson and Jordan Pollack developed a simple thermoplastic-framed polymorphic robot, a machine that can shape itself to suit a particular task, using rapid prototyping technology and a device called a 3-D printer. The printer uses a nozzle to build up progressive layers of thermoplastic to slowly create the desired structure. This printing technology could one day enable the robot to reshape parts of its body, producing new tools as required. Polymorphic robots could also be used as planetary explorers or in search-and-rescue missions. XX
