Abstract An alternative approach to layered manufacturing using design by composition, whereby users build designs from primitives that include high-level manufacturing plans, is presented. Using a Boolean operation, the user combines 2 operations, the software will then automatically create a manufacturing plan for the new design from the plans for the source primitives. Some of the benefits of design by composition are access to manufacturability feedback during design time, a greater degree of automation, the ability to create designs with embedded components, and improved control over manufacturing plans.
