Abstract Sales of rapid prototyping (RP) machines rose to a record high in 1999. According to the annual RP and tooling report by Wohlers Associates, Fort Collins, Colorado, there were 1,195 RP systems sold in 1999, an increase of 22 percent over 1998. Todd Grimm of Accelerated Technologies Inc., Hebron, Kentucky, says that product sales have increased and that service bureaus are doing better overall. In addition, the Wohlers report says that RP growth is linked to computer-aided design and solids modeling, which is in a dramatic growth phase. Future trends for the RP industry are discussed. XX
