38. Taking a powder: Laser processing

Author Irving, Robert.

Source International Journal of Powder Metallurgy. v 36 n 4 2000. p 69-74.

Abstract The use of the laser to manufacture parts from metal powder is an extension of the rapid prototyping technology used for polymeric materials. This article provides an overview of recent developments in laser-based fabrication processes. These processes include: directed light fabrication; selective laser sintering; laser direct casting; direct metal deposition; laser engineered net shaping; and laser-based free-form fabrication. Application to a wide range of ferrous and non-ferrous alloys has been demonstrated. (Auth abstract) XX
