17. Laser forming titanium components from powder

Author Froes, Sam. Institution Univ of Idaho, Moscow, ID, USA

Source Materials Technology. v 15 n 1 2000. p 8-12.

Abstract The high cost of the final components is a result of expensive production of raw titanium, and processing and machining difficulties which results in its minimal usage. The near net shape laser forming process is proposed to reduce the cost of titanium components. A laser additive manufacturing process which combines high-power laser cladding technology with advanced rapid prototyping to directly manufacture complex three-dimensional components directly from electronic CAD (computer aided design) images without the cost of molds or dies.
