The Center for BioMolecular Modeling at the Milwaukee School of Engineering has joined forces with a group of high school students to produce models of the proteins of interest in the study of the effects of anthrax. The group, from Riverside High School, was dubbed "Team Anthrax" and modeled all three proteins involved using several RP technologies.
The edema factor active site (upper photo) was produced directly in color using a Z Corp. three dimensional printer. The colors indicate specific “switch” regions of the molecule. The protective antigen (lower photo) was modeled using selective laser sintering and later painted by hand. A portion of the PA molecule that gets lopped off when it binds to its receptor site is shown in green, and the parts involved in transporting the protein across a cell membrane are shown in a multi-color format.   The CBM has spun off a company specifcally to make molecular models for research and education using the numerous RP technologies available at MSOE. 3D Molecular Designs, LLC offers custom modeling services and also a wide variety of educational models. They have also established a program to loan models to educational institutions and the company has a very interesting web site.
