83. Beyond rapid prototyping to direct fabrication: Forming metallic hardware directly from a CAD solid model

Author Anonymous.

Source Materials Technology. v 13 n 1 Mar 1998. p 5-7.

Abstract Laser Engineered Net Shaping (LENS) process is used in fabricating metallic hardware with exceptional material properties and good dimensional repeatability. The process creates a near-net-shape fully dense metallic object directly from a computer aided design (CAD) solid model. The layerwise approach in the LENS process provides the freedom to vary the composition of a material within a single structure which enable materials to be engineered a layer at a time to satisfy material requirements that are not completely compatible. LENS process can produce metallic objects of stainless steel or nickel-based superalloys with nearly a two- to threefold increase in strength plus improved ductility compared with conventionally processed materials.
