8. Solid freeform fabrication: A new fabrication paradigm

Author Crawford, Richard H. Beaman, Joseph J. Institution Univ of Texas at Austin, Austin, TX, USA

Source IEEE Spectrum. v 36 n 2 Feb 1999. p 34-43.

Abstract Researchers in the University of Texas at Austin worked on the technology called solid freeform fabrication to provide the potential to produce accurate, structurally sound three-dimensional renditions of objects designed with computers and manufactured directly from a CAD database, without part-specific tooling or human intervention, and to make them available to the user in minutes or hours. The benefits of this technology include reduced prototyping cost and design time and the ability to achieve, in one operation, shapes that would otherwise require multiple operations or in some cases be impossible to produce with standard techniques.
