Abstract Ten companies teamed in a US dollar 3 million project to commercialize LENS (Laser Engineered Net Shaping), a laser-based metal powder consolidation process. Dubbed as the Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA), the main purpose of the team is to produce an industrial tool that works automatically, robustly, and without constant supervision by a laboratory attendant. When perfected, LENS should provide CRADA companies a lead of several weeks in bringing to market new products as well as the capability to quickly vary the shapes and materials of products as market conditions shift.
