Abstract Waukesha Engine has designed a new cylinder head for implementation on the VHP series of natural gas engines. The cylinder head design process was driven by feature based solid models which were readily accessed for finite element structural analysis, rapid prototyping, and production tooling procurement in order to minimize the overall development time. The main objectives of the design effort were improved service life, higher power rating capability, and assembly compatibility with existing 8- one half inches and 9-3/8 inches bore engines in both a lean burn GL and rich burn GSI operating condition. This paper discusses the advanced utilization of solid modeling, finite element analysis, computational fluid dynamics and rapid prototyping to expedite the design and test development processes.
