Abstract In recent years, various micro machining processes have been developed to meet the demands for micro machines. It is well known that small sensors or micro parts are produced by a silicon fabrication process. However, it is necessary to use metals, ceramics and semiconductors for making 3-dimensional structures. In this study, the authors developed a method to form micro structures by a metal jet. A thin layer is first formed by molten metal jet ejected through a nozzle and a second layer is formed on the first layer. The repetition of this process produces the 3-dimensional structures. In this paper, the basic performance of the metal jet head is examined, and some examples of 3-dimensional structure made of fusible alloy are shown. The technique to reduce a size of metal drops is also described. Further, the applications for generating 3-dimensional electromagnetic structure and functional gradient material are shown.
