Abstract Rapid prototyping is a group of promising manufacturing techniques by which ceramic parts with complex shapes can be produced through additive processes. By using rapid prototyping techniques, it is possible to create parts with different compositions, microstructures and properties throughout the volume. Components from ceramics such as SiC, Al2O3, Si3N4, lead zirconate titanate, ZrO2-Al2O3, WC-Co and others, have been fabricated directly through rapid prototyping techniques. Even though these techniques are not yet fully developed for industrial applications, the progress indicates that they are likely to be used directly to make products with satisfactory properties and performance in the near future.
