26. Laser stereolithography: enlightened modeling

Author Colucci, Frank.

Source Vertiflite. v 40 n 3 July-Aug 1994. p 14-17.

Abstract Rapid prototyping and manufacturing techniques have given helicopter airframe, engine, and systems engineers new tools to speed up development of design concepts. The Boeing-Sikorsky Comanche team, for instance, has used stereolithography in particular to model structural and dynamic parts and cockpit controls of the RAH-66. Textron Lycoming has cast prototype engine parts with the help of stereolithography. Other aerospace manufacturers have harnessed the power of the computer and the laser to make complex parts and tooling far faster than conventional mockups. Stereolithography uses a UV laser to cure liquid photopolymers one thin layer at a time. The completed slice is submerged, and successive layers are formed and fused one atop the other until the shape is finished and raised from the resin vat. XX
