87. Three-Dimensional Printing: A Tool for Solid Modeling

Author Norman F. Kinzie

Source National Computer Graphics Assoc. 1991, Conference Proceedings, pp.812-822

Abstract The power of layer by layer fabrication has been demonstrated by rapid prototyping. Now it is time to explore the long-term possibilities. "Three-Dimensional Printing describes a variety of methods by which each layer of an object can be colored before the next layer of the object is begun. When these methods are developed, they will provide a computer hardcopy option which will fill the gap between colored virtual models and uncolored physical models. The lamination approach is presented in more detail. Tangible progress is reported on the demonstration of separate materials and methods. Conceptual progress is reported on ways to combine components and overcome long-standing obstacles. Research directions are suggested. XX
