Abstract The writer discusses the way market forces and new tools are reshaping design at both an educational and industrial level. Machine designers are now required to accomplish much more in much less time. While advanced design tools such as parametric solid modeling software and rapid prototyping technologies aid this requirement, devoting substantial time and effort to developing a comprehensive project plan is still necessary. Changes in the way engineers do design are putting pressure on the university engineering curriculum to change. It is concluded that an alignment must be maintained between academic programs and the industrial environment for students to be successful. XX
