Abstract The process efficiency of laser forming can be significantly increased by using special cooling devices, suitable for the rapid cooling of locally heated sheet metal samples. This paper describes some of the different cooling techniques that can be applied to increase the potentials of laser forming to become a powerful manufacturing method for rapid prototyping tasks and the production of small lots. In order to enable a comparison between the process efficiencies of laser forming under water-cooling conditions and laser forming under air-cooling conditions, a series of linear laser bending experiments using pure aluminum samples was carried out and the achieved bend angle was chosen as a criterion for the different process efficiencies obtained. In addition, some exemplary microstructural investigations of pure aluminum and an aluminum alloy of the AlMgSi-type are presented, to discuss possible laser induced changes of the material microstructures, namely changes of the grain structure, the disl ocation substructure and the precipitation structure.
