In Troy, NY, he plays with his model trains, hangs out in The Trainman’s Bar, and fantasizes about his sexual prowess. Regulars at the bar suspect he may be sleeping with Jean, his domineering mother, who is an aspiring artist. In an effort to gain complete independence and set Sammy on the ‘right’ track, she continually harasses him. She arranges an interview for him in NYC with an old friend, a director of a. tourist agency. On the train to the city for the big interview, Sammy meets Carla, a money hungry semi-prostitute who tries to seduce him and steal his money. Sammy is saved by a conductor friend and warned about Carla by Joe, a down and out race tract addict.

[The script’s subplot reveals Sammy’s sexual fantasies. After each female encounter, he brings them to his caboose car stationed in the country where he takes his pleasure with them.].

For Sammy, New York City is both a revelation and an epiphany.: He taunts passers-by with his ticket punch, moons security cameras in buildings, inadvertently loses his wallet, invites young women on their way to work to come to his party, and finally goes to his interview which, shows him to be completely a misfit, incapable of serious work. Back on the street, he is delighted by this, relieved to have no further obligations. However, his pleasure is short lived: In a diner, he cannot find his wallet, which was lost earlier, and gradually the weight of being completely broke and alone in this strange environment closes in on him..

Without money and transportation home, the city overwhelms him. In desperation, Sammy telephones Jean upstate and learns that his wallet was found on the street by a painter-sculptor. Sammy retrieves his wallet and takes the train back home. In Troy, at the Trainmans’ bar he announces that because of his New York experiences, he has decided to become a train conductor and a real trainman afterall. He returns home to Jean, explains his decision, and the two of them climb upstairs and get into bed together.
